Abstract
The Lithuanian period of Ukrainian history, from the standpoint of independent specialists, is the epoch of formation of the Ukrainian nationality and this, of course, defines its uniqueness. One of such specialist historians, who expressed and argued views on the ethno-creative nature of the processes that took place on Ukrainian lands during their subordination to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, was the prominent Ukrainian historian Myron Korduba. During the famous discussions of the 1920s – early 1930s in the Ukrainian intellectual environment (of course – outside Soviet Ukraine) about the time and circumstances of the creation of the Ukrainian nation (at that time they used this term, although more precisely the term "nationality" was used) he made an article on the subject. The article – titled "The Most Important Moment in Ukrainian History" – was published in the July issue of the popular Ukrainian journal "Literary and Scientific Bulletin" for 1930. At the beginning of his work, the researcher aims to find out which of the "moments" of Ukrainian history are the most important. Such a moment, in his opinion, is one that "forced the population of modern Ukrainian land to be grouped into a separate ethnic group, which gave impetus to the creation of a separate Ukrainian nation." For without this moment, as the scientist correctly points out in another article, "there would not be all other moments." This case (the "moment") was due to the separation of the southwestern Rus lands from connection with other Rus lands and their unification into the Lithuanian state in the second half of the 14th century.
