Abstract

This paper explores the emotional aspect of inner family relationships specifically those between parents and children in an early-modern ukrainian noble family. The paper highlights factors and adverse conditions in which children were brought up. Their future adult behavior was shaped by authoritarian parenting, early socialization of noble offsprings, guardianship practices, hardships in everyday life (noble incursions and tatar invasions), commonplace acts of violence and aggression in which parents involved their children. Based on archival documentary sources, the paper analyzes relationships between parents and adult children in individual families. It is shown that family relationships were not always peaceful and were often characterized by misunderstandings and conflicts; widowed mothers particularly suffered ill-treatment of their adult children. Family difficulties were typically caused by financial disputes.
